3 Reasons Why you Should Visit New Mexico
We recently celebrated our 2 year anniversary in New Mexico! This trip to the Southwest was not planned, but this beautiful state had been sitting on our bucketlist for a while. When our plans to Colorado failed due to a canceled flight…we decided to hit the road! We traveled at night so we were not able to see the beauty driving into New Mexico. We not only left with new fond memories of this place, but an appreciation to all of it’s sweet spots. If you haven’t thought about visiting New Mexico, I’m giving you 3 reasons why you should.
Culture
Almost immediately the next morning we knew we “weren’t in Kansas anymore”. New Mexico reeks with culture and in the best of ways! I enjoyed the adobe style looking homes, dessert fresh air, high-heavenly mountains and the oh-so friendly people passing! This state has a culture of it’s own and I loved it! It’s loaded with history of the Native Americans, and there are many areas that pay tribute to it’s rich past. We were able to hike along the Petroglyph National Monument where we caught a small glimpse of writing from ancient times. It almost felt as if we were on the egg hunt for hieroglyphics. It was so fun!
Natural Beauty
Need I say more here? The natural beauty was unlike anything that I’ve seen in Texas. Yes, Texas has some beautiful spots, but mountains and numerous trails…I think not. We were able to visit Sandia Peak Mountains on a colder day and it was stunning! The drive up was something that you’d see right out of a postcard! Pine trees covered in snow, white top mountain peeks, and a greenery scene on the way down the mountain. It was sure a sight to see! Next time we visit, we would like to take the Sandia Peak Tramway to get the best of views!
Trails- there are so many trails for all levels! Even if you’re not into hiking trails, it’s good to participate in a trail and literally take your time! There is so much beauty to see to stay completely indoors. We took our dog Ginger with us which was an experience in itself! I wrote about Pros and Cons on Traveling with a Pet where you can hear about our extra adventures!
Carlsbad Caverns- I’m adding this to this list because it’s something we didn’t get to do this time! I found caverns that’d be so interesting to tour and I highly suggest you give it a try if it’s your thing!
White Sands- another place to visit next time! Due to it being a few hours away we weren’t able to make that drive, but best be sure we won’t miss out next time!
Artisan Finds
Ok i’ll admit, I LOVE places that offer memorabilia made by a local artist. I love it! I support! I buy it! lol We visited Old Town Alburquerque and Sante Fe Market and both offered artisan finds. However I felt that Sante Fe Market had a tad more. I loved how these designers lined up their products on colorful mats for you to view and purchase. This is where I purchased my turquoise ring which I adore!
